Davey Havok Drawing

This graphite piece depicts AFI frontman Davey Havok in a live setting, based on photography by Gary Livingston. This drawing was made for the digital gallery, The Bodies Experience, showcasing fan works of all different mediums in promotion of AFI’s latest album, Bodies.

As a side project, I soon found myself with ample time to work on this piece during the COVID-19 lockdown months. During these hard times, it became more important to have an escape through artistic venues. While not time efficient, I chose graphite as this is the medium I’ve had the most practice in and had the most enjoyment.

Rendering organic forms in graphite is enjoyable because of how quickly you can add dimension to an object, though finer details can be grueling to map out, such as individual hairs. I opted for a simplified gradient as the background, which acted as a sensible middle ground between a fully rendered background and blank empty space. This additionally helped to bring focus on the foreground, which was already composed of dynamic angles.
