Harmonica Painting

I find watercolor paints to be an unforgiving medium, however it felt appropriate when creating the bright, reflective surface of a harmonica. This piece belonged to a larger series on music in general, and I felt the harmonica’s unique design would add some variety to the set.

The instrument itself made use of a lot of empty space with the reflective shading creating the form. The case added the much needed contrast through its bright use of color. The open composition obscures one side of the case while tilting the case at an angle. The placement of the harmonica works off of this by creating another converging diagonal line that draws the eye to the in-focus corner of the instrument.
