Fruit Bowl Rendering

Building off of a previous piece, this project had me composite an entire scene using the photorealistic Mental Ray software. Based off photographed still life images, I took liberties in the composition, setting, and lighting to evoke a more interesting composition in the image.

The orange was recycled from the previous project; to add contrast to the previous image, I changed the setting to an outdoor picnic table. Making use of the MiSSS Fast Skin Shader, the original apple was duplicated and altered to create the half apple with the exposed core. This particular shader is effective for creating depth when exposed to light. The plum uses the same shader to create light film seen on the skin under direct light.

The lighting in this scene is unique for using the Image Based Lighting system to take lighting information directly from a photographed source. Using a panoramic radiant image, the program created the general environment of a sunny outside environment for the image.

The composition was the final step once the models were finished. My final arrangement of the image complied with the rules of thirds, as well as a strong diagonal line (the knife) to lead the eye through the image and create interest.
