Coffee Pot Self-Portrait

The inception of this piece was born in the prompt of an unusual self-portrait; finding unconventional items that provide a reflective surface that shows the artist. An old coffee pot provided a clear image, but with the interesting side effect of distorting the image around the cylindrical form of the pot. I chose graphite based on my familiarity with the medium and its ability to switch between a soft and hard focus. As such, the closure around the coffee pot created a stark contrast with the plain white background. The cut-off arm also helps break up the closed compositions of the reflection within the coffee pot and the coffee pot itself.

The arm creates the motion of the piece along with the pouring angle the pot is situated at. While the piece is rough and not polished with the intention of creating a photorealistic image, the piece has a strong sense of proportion based off the activity of the enclosed elements within the drawing.
