City Model Rendering

This 3D modeled city was created to supplement my portfolio by drawing to one of my core strengths, modeling. At the same time, I originally wanted to create a piece that was suitable for display as well. Coming off the heels of a few pieces fabricated with a 3D printer, I figured having a digital and physical representation of this model would display well. Unfortunately, the 3D print aspect had to be abandoned due to the complexity of the model, however I pursued the modeling end to create a more realistic rendering.

During the conception stages, I toyed with different eras of architectural styles. Personal preference and visual interest played a role in deciding on a futuristic Art Deco style, not unlike that seen in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

The modeling was done in Maya and rendering was handled by Arnold. I chose Arnold’s rendering software based on the soft, realistic lighting and the tangible appearance of the stone textures.

For display, I decided to compose a shot to have blown up and printed. For a realistic daylight system, I opted for a clear blue sky to add more visual interest. Adding a depth of field through the primary camera also created a strong focus on the center of the city. Upon rendering the final image out, I had it printed on high quality poster paper and displayed in exhibition with other senior students’ projects.

Additionally, I rendered out a short video segment of a turntable view of the city for inclusion in my demo reel; an animated GIF of this has been posted.
